Biography
I am an Associate Professor at Swansea University Medical School. I initially studied Physiology (BSc Hons) at Cardiff University, before performing doctoral research in the laboratory of Dr Tim Wells, also at Cardiff. Here, I studied hypothalamic control of growth hormone secretion - an experience I enjoyed so much that I decided to try and make a career of research. After a post-doc with Tim and Prof David Carter’s Molecular Neuroscience laboratory, I moved - as a Fellow - to the recently formed Medical School at Swansea University.
This environment exposed me to clinical research approaches that I have established, alongside pre-clinical models, as an important component of my laboratory. I lead a small but friendly laboratory that studies the gut-brain axis in the context of metabolism, learning and neurodegeneration.
My lab is funded by a range of medical charities and the MRC. I sit on a number of grant committees as Chair and as a regular member; including as Deputy Grants secretary for the BSN. I enjoy mentoring students (Undergrads, Masters, PhD) and post-docs, and collaborating widely with scientists from across the world.
