How does our Journal support our community?
You probably know that the Journal of Neuroendocrinology (JNE) is the owned and managed by the BSN, but did you know that, every time you publish in JNE, you are supporting the next
generation of neuroendocrinologists?
That’s just one reason why JNE is special. It is owned by the neuroendocrinology community and operates for the benefit of the neuroendocrinology globally. The surplus from JNE is invested in neuroendocrinology through grants. In a year when there is an International Congress of Neuroendocrinology, JNE via the BSN provides about $150,000 to support the meeting in various ways, including student travel awards.
Taking you back a bit, JNE was established by the BSN in 1989 under the editorship of Stafford Lightman (Bristol, UK). It is currently edited by Julian Mercer (Aberdeen, UK) and
Bob Millar (Pretoria, S Africa) and is published on behalf of the BSN by Wiley. JNE is the only journal that focuses on neuroendocrinology in its widest definition, from fundamental and mechanistic neuroendocrinology to translational and clinical neuroendocrinology, including neuroendocrine tumors. It is the official journal of the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society and published their guidance papers and other material.
JNE has recently covered topics ranging from celebrating 100 years of insulin with a special issue, through the impact of Covid-19 on the management of patients, and the effects of parental and child screen time on socio-emotional problems at age 5, to the potential of oxytocin as a tool to combat obesity. As we move into an era of Open Access, the continued financial success of JNE and its associated grant program depends even more on the support of the global neuroendocrine author community.
During 2023, JNE is recruiting a new Editor-in-Chief for the Fundamental and Mechanistic strand and applications are invited from neuroendocrinologists worldwide. Recruitment for
a new Editor-in-Chief for the Translational and Clinical strand will begin later this year.
As Gareth Leng said at JNE’s 30th anniversary celebration, "This Journal is precious; owned by our community, run by our community for our community."
